Alentejo, is the largest region in Portugal in terms of area and the fourth most populous region in the country.
Alentejo has the fourth largest regional economy in Portugal. Even though it only has a 5% weight in the national economy, it is today the region where people have the third highest income of all seven national regions.
In 2014, Alentejo won the title of "Best Wine Region to Visit" in the world competition promoted by the newspaper USA Today.
In the same year, the beaches of the Alentejo Litoral were also highlighted by the British daily "The Guardian" as the best in Europe.
In recent times, Alentejo has won several awards in the area of tourism, both nationally and internationally. It has already won four times (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013) the award for best tourism region in Portugal.
