This town on the outskirts of Lisbon, in the so-called "Saloia" Region, which supplied the capital with horticultural products, is known for the imposing Palace-Convent, the largest Portuguese building, built in the 18th century by order of King João V.
Annexed to the Convent, the Tapada de Mafra, acquired by D. João V in the mid-18th century to enhance the setting of the building, was used as a hunting preserve and is currently open to the public.
On the outskirts of the village of Sobreiro you can visit the José Franco Ceramics Workshop, where you can appreciate the recreation of the most traditional aspects of life in the villages of the region, in real size or through animated miniatures.
Near Mafra, by the sea, the traditional fishing village of Ericeira is much sought after as a seaside resort, and by surfers attracted by the excellent conditions that this beach and the neighboring ones (Ribeira de Ilhas, Lizandro) offer for the practice of this sport.
